about1.jpgThe Faculty of Wood Engineering and Creative Industries (FWECI for short) has a special place within Hungarian higher education. In addition to the nationally unique wood-related higher education that is offered by FWECI and our other technical programs, the applied arts education started in the 1990’s, and the even newer IT training are also important. These three areas – technical sciences, information technology and arts – do not merely co-exist, but complement each other to allow the training of versatile and competent professionals.

Wood Sciences are very impotant at FWECI. Our education and research experience of over 50 years guarantees that our students get the best and highest quality training in this field. Throughout the years, our education has been continually updated and adapted to the needs of the industry and to the new challenges, to provide state-of-the-art knowledge to our students.

In addition to wood, all other programs provide excellent training as well. The reputation of our arts education attracts students from all around the country, so they can participate in the high quality training in Sopron. Our information technology program generates mostly regional interest, but our graduates have their pick of well-paid jobs in Hungary or abroad.

In addition to education, FWECI is the only wood research institution in Hungary. The many research assignments from the Hungarian wood industries demonstrate the reputation of our research and innovation. We have also received many Hungarian and international research grants. Research in light industry, information technology and arts has an increasing role. These projects are often related to wood.

about2.jpgOur new state-of-the art research facilty, the Natural Resources Research Centre includes some 80 laboratories covering a wide range of research topics from wood and paper manufacturing through energetics, robotics, polymer technology, all the way to nanotechnology, and much more. In addition to our pioneering research and innovation, our accredited laboratories offer a range of standardised testing services.

To learn more about the activities of FWECI, feel free to browse the pages on our International website, where each area of our education, research and service, our facilities and the unique student traditions are described in detail.

Courses offered at the Faculty of Wood Engineering and Creative Industries:

Timber Industry Engineer and Industrial Design Engineer courses

(Please note: this is a tentative list, some changes in the courses offered, contents, lecturers or nr. of credits are possible.)

Hungarian language - beginner

Code: SOE009

ECTS: 2 credits

The primary aim of teaching Hungarian as a foreign language is to develop the communicative competence of the students. In addition, the main task of teaching Hungarian as a foreign language is to arouse the interest of foreign students living in Hungary in learning Hungarian and getting to know Hungarian culture, in this way promoting their integration into the academic and wider social environment.
In the course of learning Hungarian, students should acquire a basic vocabulary that will enable them to communicate in everyday life and to integrate into the Hungarian language education system. They should also have basic grammatical and pragmatic knowledge to be able to participate in everyday interactions. Similar to first language acquisition, the process of learning a foreign language is always contextualised and takes place in concrete linguistic situations in which verbal and non-verbal elements form a natural unit.
Skills are developed in a complex way because they are naturally interrelated in real language situations. The development of cultural and intercultural competence in language learning (especially in the target language environment) is essential to enable learners to become open to their own as well as other language cultures. In addition to learning the socio-cultural rules of the target language culture and the corresponding linguistic behaviour, students should also become familiar with certain cultural works, symbols and traditions in order to feel more at home in the target language culture.

Wood Modification

Code: F2ERAWM

Lecturer: Prof. Róbert Németh PhD, Miklós Bak PhD

Course contents:

The market share of modified wood material is growing intensively. There are several applied industrial processes and even more newly developed technologies just before the industrial application.

In the frame of the subject the students get acquainted with the purposes of the modification of the wood material. In order to offer a better understanding of the processes applied in the industry the theoretical background is discussed as well. In the lectures and laboratory exercises the modification techniques with oil, heat, steam, external mechanical forces, irradiation and biological treatments will be discussed in detail. Furthermore the effects of the treatments on the wood properties will be discussed, with special attention to density, strength properties, sorption properties, dimensional stability, equilibrium moisture content, natural durability, colour and technological properties (glue ability, etc). The effect of the anatomical properties on the success of the modification treatment is included in the subject as well. Additionally the possible uses of the modified wood will be discussed considering the market developments: plastics gain market share at the expense of wood.

The study program involves lectures and exercises in the laboratory.

ECTS: 4 credits

Wood Based Construction Technology F2ERAWBC

Lecturers: Prof. László Bejó PhD, Zoltán Hantos PhD

Course contents:

Wood as a construction material; properties, grading. Structural wood based composites. Other materials used in wood based construction. Wood based structural building components (glulam, trusses, I-beams, etc.) Wood construction systems and technologies (lightframe, log house, half timbered, beam&column, etc.) Special wood based structures (bridges, noise reduction structures, etc.)

ECTS: 5 credits

Bonding and surface treatment of wood

Code: F2ERABOND

Lecturer: Csilla Csiha PhD

Course contents:

The presented material deals with the theoretical aspects of gluing and surface finishing of wood. Overhauls the wood as adherent, wood properties that are influencing gluing, and their effect on the bonding process and quality. Analyses the interactions between wood surface and glue during the pressing process. Reviews the effect of additives, catalysts, pressing force, pressing temperature, pressing time, on the bonding process and quality. Analyses the bond quality and the related criteria. Within the topic of surface treatment the main theoretical acknowledgements, the main characteristics of film formulating materials and their particularities are discussed such as viscosity, tixotrophy, wetting, spreading. The mathematical and physical characteristics of the coat are presented, work of adhesion, work of cohesion, internal stresses, surface roughness, pore filling, anchoring. The vapor diffusion versus water repellent behavior and UV light reflecting and inhibiting properties are discussed as well.

ECTS: 5 credits
