On February 5, 2026, the senior leadership and academic delegation of the University of Sopron visited Mendel University in Brno (MENDELU). The meeting aimed to strengthen ties between the two institutions and define key areas for joint development, with a particular focus on forestry cooperation, digital education, and internationalization.
This visit to Brno marks a significant milestone in an ongoing successful collaboration: representatives from MENDELU previously visited Sopron in 2025 as part of the "Czech Autumn" program series. This partnership is a result of conscious, long-term planning, regarded by both parties as a relationship of strategic importance.
Beyond their geographical proximity, the University of Sopron and Mendel University are closely aligned in their missions. Both institutions possess a robust, practice-oriented knowledge base and play a pioneering role in sustainability, "green" perspectives, and the modernization of agricultural and forestry sciences. This professional kinship provides an excellent foundation for joint educational and research initiatives, as well as international network cooperation. The cooperation has already yielded concrete results: following the visit, the organization of a professional field trip for Agroforestry MSc students has commenced, supported by the Pannónia Scholarship Programme. Furthermore, professional dialogue continues at the level of international grants: our partners have shared the documentation for the 'SCAN DANUBE' EU consortium project, which focuses on the future of Hungarian ash stands in the Danube floodplain. The relevance of the topic is highlighted by the fact that the relevant institutes of the Faculty of Forestry (EMK) have already been notified.
The deepening of scientific ties is further evidenced by written confirmation received after the visit, stating that an expert from Mendel University will participate in the Silva Network conference with an independent presentation, further strengthening the knowledge sharing between our institutions.
Focus on Digital Education and Faculty Support
A central theme of the professional discussions was the advancement of the digital learning environment. Both universities presented their best practices: MENDELU highlighted its latest Moodle-based system developments and innovative solutions for interactive curriculum design, while the University of Sopron showcased its currently intensive digital innovation efforts. Both parties agreed that providing methodological support and motivation for faculty members is a key factor in creating a modern, experience-based learning environment.
Innovation and Tradition: A Visit to the University Brewery
As part of the program, the delegation visited the Institute of Food Technology, where they gained insight into the operation of MENDELU’s own university brewery. The visit served as an inspiring example of how scientific education can be integrated with pilot-plant innovation and hands-on practical training.
Next Steps in Sopron: Strengthening Ties with a Carnival Beer Tasting
The professional dialogue will continue in the coming weeks, complemented by a more informal community event. On February 16, 2026, during the Carnival season, Sopron will host an accordion-music beer tasting event, where guests can sample MENDELU’s signature beers. The event aims to reinforce formal institutional cooperation with strong personal and professional connections.
A Shared Vision in the International Space
The leadership of both universities confirmed their intention to launch joint pilot projects. Future plans include short-cycle training programs, the development of micro-credentials, and collaborative digital curriculum development. This visit was a landmark event in the strategic alliance between these two Central European institutions, which aims to increase the visibility of the region within the international higher education landscape.
